Cloud computing is a type of Internet-based computing that provides shared computer processing resources and data to computers and other devices on demand. It is a model for enabling ubiquitous, on-demand access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., computer networks, servers, storage, applications and services),which can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort. Cloud computing and storage solutions provide users and enterprises with various capabilities to store and process their data in either privately owned, or third-party data centers that may be located far from the user–ranging in distance from across a city to across the world. Cloud computing relies on sharing of resources to achieve coherence and economy of scale, similar to a utility (like the electricity grid) over an electricity network.

Just to highlight about the cloud computing efforts of Indian Govt departments that putting efforts to make a successful digital India by various initiatives and one of them is in cloud computing domain with name of Meghraj. It is a National cloud launched on 4th Feb 2014 used by various Indian govt departments and complete list is uploaded on NIC site about the services that it is providing to people of Govt departments. It is provided 4 types of services to various District/State/UT/Central Govt departments.

  1. Platform as a service i.e. Paas
  2. Infrastructure as a service i.e. IaaS
  3. Solution as a service i.e. SaaS
  4. Storage as a service i.e. SaaS

About Meghraj:

In order to utilise and harness the benefits of Cloud Computing, Government of India has embarked upon an ambitious initiative – “GI Cloud” which has been named as ‘MeghRaj’. The focus of this initiative is to accelerate delivery of e-services in the country while optimizing ICT spending of the Government. This will ensure optimum utilization of the infrastructure and speed up the development and deployment of eGov applications. The architectural vision of GI Cloud encompasses a set of discrete cloud computing environments spread across multiple locations, built on existing or new (augmented) infrastructure, following a set of common protocols, guidelines and standards issued by the Government of India. Two Policy reports viz., “GI Cloud Strategic Direction Paper” and “GI Cloud Adoption and Implementation Roadmap” have been prepared by DeitY. Read on cloud brochure by NIC.

Previously Govt. department used to invite tenders to host their websites or different services on publicly available infrastructure that was prone to hacking and security was at risk and cost were very high with less reliability and now most of the department using internal cloud service Meghraj to host their web sites, digital contents those were easily accessible internally by different Govt departments.

It helped Indian IT infrastructure in cost effective by utilizing central unused shared resources, much secure by centralized security policy and framework, helped in gaining performance efficiency and  Operational excellence as per Govt requirements.

Now there is transparency on cloud costing to each department as Meghraj site provides you cost calculator as per your application resource requirement.

NIC has designated responsible person with name of  NIC cloud coordinators with whom Govt employees can interact to get their requirement done. Some of the other Govt departments has their own centralized IT resources that using Eucaplytus as private cloud setup and i heard that Haryana Govt. is utilizing it for their internal setup.

Benefits of cloud computing in digital India campaign:

  1. Now IT resources(Server,Storage,Network) are available on centralized location that helped quick delivery of services in cost effective and secure way that provides much reliability and resiliency to handle failures.
  2. More services of various Govt. departments can be uploaded on cloud infrastructure in short duration of time that helping implementer to achieve their desired goals in short duration of time. Now Govt has more confidence in their IT infrastructure as all resources are centralized handled by skilled team by NIC and helping Govt to use IT services within different Govt departments.
  3. Digital Locker, by now most of us is aware of it, aren’t we? Storing of important files and authenticate them online using Aadhaar card number, this is the initiative taken by government under e-Governance, Digital locker system is based on Cloud technology unmistakably, and I am so sure that other many other schemes that has been formulated under Digital India, Cloud is going to play a key role in it. – See more at: https://www.esds.co.in/blog/contribution-of-cloud-towards-digital-india/#sthash.YLbL4ZpU.dpuf
  4. Mobile app revolution is the another element associated with Cloud and digitization, government has started MyGov under Deity (Department of electronics and Information technology), online registration, Swaccha bharat mission mobile app and many such edges that could make a data available below our hand.
  5. One that is obvious to strike is contribution of cloud is going to increase in the phase of development of Digital India. It is expected that Cloud market will reach $3 billion by next year in India, according to the recent report by Gartner. SMBs are adopting Cloud very swiftly knowing its assistance, it is predicted that if all SMBs in India are adopting Cloud computing, Market will reach upto $56 billion, with 1.1 million jobs in future.
  6. Vision ‘Digital India’: 15 point vision of Narendra Modi for Digital India includes Digital Locker System as mentioned, High speed Digital Highways uniting Nation, Open and transparent Government with e-Governance, enabling Real time information for everyone, Mobile enabled services, e-banking, eSign, e-commerce driving entrepreneurship, etc. all in all everything related with huge data that can be accessed readily and provides services to the complete Nation.-

  7. Now we are seeing digital change in payment system after 8th November 2016 decision by Indian Govt to curb black money and to handle such big transnational data some how these payment gateway providers or e-Walet providers will be using cloud computing to handle and store such a massive data on daily basis.

There are more many indirect benefits that people of India are getting through cloud computing that emerged in last some years and devastating traditional IT infrastructure model and changing the IT dynamics where big players like AWS, Microsoft changing the data center and cloud market and helping masses that were not possible using traditional IT infrastructure.
