Most of the IT professionals those who are in IT infrastructure domain from last 10 years has in depth understanding and exposure about how VMware products specially vSphere portfolio that helped companies to deliver mature virtual infrastructure and pool of resources by leveraging central hardware resources in form of ESXi host cluster where blade/physical hardware servers with high compute and memory capacity were deployed to handle organizations need.
We know its very much mature till now and 90% virtualization market is still with VMware as compare to other virtualization vendors like Redhat REVA(not seen light of the day in production), Citrix Xenserver platform and other virtualization platform those were present from 90’s like HPVM(Virtual machine), Sun Solaris LDOM’s,Containers etc.
Virtualization market is going toward next level where containerization of resources is happening in form of docker and server less model where just a job or task will be handled by a service where end users are not aware of infrastructure running behind such services like AWS Lambda.
Defiantly its add on over resource offering type but do we really think that next level of achivement of IT organization is to have more virtualization in their data center?
These days we have seen cloud market is gaining IT market share where AWS is taking a lead that has taken around $16 billion market share that counts about 15% within this year from in total $240 billion IT market from other big players. People are thinking more toward cloud computing and its offering to handle resource load.
VMware is unable to deliver much on cloud front as its offering like vCloud Director platform,vCloud Air dedicated/private/public/disaster recover in IaaS domain unable to meet client expectation as its just a wrapper around virtualization technology and even they are unable to implement successfully as we have seen their vCloud public infrastructure went down multiple times without any alert on their end or any formal communication at client end and when we received the RCA it shows how a small and silly mistakes they did on HA implementation while providing cloud solutions.
I was big fan of VMware and its mature vSphere product range and was big follower of VMware about its offering in IT market but these days i have seen they have lost that shine and i am getting attracted toward Amazon AWS where they are launching almost all services that falls under IaaS, PaaS, SaaS category with much maturity. They are leading every where from servers to storage , services to their own silicon chips, high power consumption to power distribution to generation and to support this read my blog talking about AWS self sustainability. I seen in AWS re: Invent 2016 that CTO of VMware talking to VMware CEO Andy Jeff and my all focus on was on Andy about how he was listening to VMware CTO to build more robust services for them.
VMware will remain market leader in Virtualization domain but will not be able to sustain in other area specially in cloud computing as they are only focusing on IaaS and disaster recover solution in form of their cloud offering but some how its limiting them to gain more market share in that domain.
We are some what positive on VMware hybrid solution as most of the load sharing happens between Virtual infra to Cloud and Cloud to Virtual infra so they might get some share in that area to retain their customer as even VMware focusing on vCloud Air disaster recovery solution where we can upload over VM’s as DR to their DC’s.
I have some practical exposure where AWS list some limitation about data movement from vSphere environment to AWS where it not looks like really hybrid solution by AWS for VMware infrastructure as it directly not supports VMDK format to run on their infra as we have to convert it into OVF format. AWS provides server migration service that internally they deploy a AWS Connector Management appliance for VMware that you can deploy in your vSphere environment and can schedule migration from its console that will copy your VMDK’s and will move it to S3 from where you can build AWS supported AMI’s to launch new instance.

So at the end i will say Amazon is going to lead and going to become next big player in Data center and cloud market where as VMware will still struggle to get market share and its up to them how they want to retain market share in virtualization domain as their support services are not meeting client expectation and internal hierarchy to process incident tickets are not good and takes a long time to fix incidents. Their engineering and operation team are living in silo that creating a knowledge gap in between two teams and delaying customer solution on raised tickets. I hope VMware can improve over their part and have a retrospect over their support model so that we guys can regain lost confidence in VMware support.
